Digester Eggs

A modern addition to the Greenpoint skyline are the digester eggs of the Newtown Creek Waste Water Treatment plant.

Part of the upgrade to the plant, the largest in all of New York City, the eggs are actually enormous stainless steel vessels which utilize the same bacteria found in the human gastronintestinal tract to “digest”, break down, and sterilize the estimated 315 million gallons a day of sewage that enters the plant. The NCWWTP drains nearly 25 square miles of New York City, including most of Manhattan below 79th street.

Locals call them the “shit-tits” to the chagrin of facility officals.
