There is only one airport in the world that has a people mover system designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, and quite fascinatingly, it’s not in Orlando or Anaheim—but in Houston, Texas.

At first glance, the people mover at George Bush Intercontinental Airport known as the “Subway” doesn’t look like much, nothing quite resemblant to a metro system one might expect in a city. But an avid fan of Disney World may notice its similarity to PeopleMover, an attraction in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, which the Subway shares much of its mechanical technology with.

The Subway first opened in 1969 along with the airport, but was replaced by a new underground train system that utilizes the WEDWay system, developed by what was then known as WED Transportation Systems, a division within the Walt Disney Company responsible for the design and construction of the rides at Disney parks. This should make the Subway a rare example of a Disney ride outside Disney parks, at least in spirit.
